Question from Lucinda:

Quote:
How common is pharyngitis in two to three year old racehorses, and how much of a contribution would this play in a horse quitting at the end of a breeze? My filly was out of air after a half mile in her 5/8th's work yesterday, which is not the norm for her. The trainer suspected she was bleeding, so I insisted she get scoped. She did not bleed, but was found to have a grade 2 pharyngitis. Her only symptom so far had been that she did not want her breakfast earliar in the day, which I had contributed at the time to just being nervous. Does anyone have experience with pharyngitis?

My reply:

Yep, it is a condition that is probably far more prevalent in the race
horse than many think. It is easily overlooked, too! You better invest in a
good nebulizor for starters, the ultrasound type. Neublize with colloidal
silver (CS) for starters. DMSO and CS is very good.

You might want to look into making a very effective throat paint. It is
made of poke root (Phytolacca americana). It is superb in may throat
inflammation problems. I would make some poke root/DMSO tincture and paint
it on your horse's throat three times a day. You can also drench her with
it, approximately 150-300 drops for a 1000 pound horse. If you want to read
about it:

An herbal list of which I am a member, recently had a thread on poke. A
woman sent this in and I found it most interesting and not unexpected:

Quote:
"My very first
experience with using poke with someone who was looking for help was
with a woman who was in her late 30's who had an intense throat
infection. she had seen the MD and had several courses of antibiotics,
which didn't help. she then went to a homeopath, again without
results. she came to the little herb shop that i was working in at the
time, and me fresh out of Gail's course. We sat and talked about how
she was feeling, and what she had tried. we talked for at least a good
hour and i grabbed a jar of dried poke from the shelf and talked to her
about the plant and about the warnings, and how i was feeling about it.
she thought it might be for her and asked me how to use it. i
suggested a tea in very small (1 oz) doses, once when she got home, and
once before bed. i gave her my home number, in case there were
questions/concerns and told her that the minute she didn't feel right
about it, stop. 2 days later she came in and grinned and gave me a big
kiss and said after the initial queasy feeling (from the release of the
infection i think), she felt better than she had in months. after that,
i was even more of a believer."

It works on horses too!
