Question answer from Quora: Have you secretly found a treatment for a chronic condition that no doctor ever suggested?

Philip Timms
Philip Timms, Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (2018-present)

I was just thinking about this this morning. I recently had a flare up of my uncomplicated diverticulitis, for which my GP would usually offer me antibiotics, were I to trouble her with this problem.

However, I have found that all I have to do is not eat anything for a day or so (while keeping my fluid intake going) As if by magic, the symptoms disappear.

Now, looking at the literature, there seems to be little evidence for antibiotics. There are references to conservative management and fluids, but generally no clear message that fasting for a day or two might be helpful. So, not exactly a secret but, if my experience is anything to go by, perhaps under-emphasised.
